MY RECOMMENDATIONS

Kodiak has many, many fishing charters, lots of bear viewing charters, several restaurants, and a few museums.  The following list represents those establishments I feel comfortable in recommending to you.   It doesn’t mean anything if a business isn’t listed here.  The Kodiak Island Visitor Center is an excellent resource.  Call or e-mail them with your questions.

Bear Viewing:

King Fisher Aviation.  I have worked with Kyle and Glen at their hangar and flown with them many times.  They are considerate, reliable, and always friendly.  But most of all, they are safe.  Their planes are well maintained and inspected regularly.  Contact Kyle or Glen for a bear viewing trip or to charter a plane for your destination on Kodiak.

Remote Lodging and Fishing:

Zachar Bay Lodge.  If you want a remote fishing experience, you should book a stay with the Eaton Family at Zachar Bay Lodge.  I worked at the Lodge one summer so have first -hand knowledge of the quality treatment you will receive from the Eaton family, their guides, and their cook.  They will take you fishing for halibut and/or salmon, fly you for a bear-viewing trip, send you on a river rafting excursion, or let you just relax at their clean, comfortable facility.  Kyle and Glen (see bear viewing) are members of the Eaton family so transportation to and from the Lodge is easily arranged.

Local Charters:

Fish and Chips or Kodiak Island Charters.  Roy and I have been fishing with Fish-N-Chips Charters.  Roy has been fishing with Kodiak Island Charters.  The captains and their crews worked hard to assure a trip that resulted in catching the limit of fish.  This meant they also had to assist the beginners (me) with the techniques that would bring in the catch while also tending to everyone else on the boat.  They arrange for your fish to be picked up and processed upon your return to the harbor.  They provide the equipment and bait.  Ask Dave at Fish-N-Chips for a half-day charter if that is all you have time for.  He may be able to do it.

Coffee Shop:

Harborside Coffee & Goods. Roy is the coffee drinker.   It’s a short walk from our place for a great cup of coffee at this cozy shop on the harbor.  Drink your coffee there or take it with you and walk the docks.  If you’re lucky, you might see an orca over by the gazebo.

Kayaking:

Orcas Unlimited.  I just met Andy.  Get in touch with him if you are interested in kayaking.  There is a copy of his DVD in each of the rooms.

Beer:

Kodiak Island Brewing Co.   Excellent locally brewed beer located on Shelikof St.
